Let's Talk About Oxford
Let's Explore the Area
The borough was once called Oxford Crossing and Oxford Village strategically placed somewhere between Philadelphia PA, and Baltimore, MD. In 1833, Oxford was formally consolidated as a region. Its first burgess (presently called the town hall leader) was Thomas Alexander, who has a corner store thought to be the oldest structure in Oxford.
The northern portion of Oxford was claimed by the Dickey family in the nineteenth century. The Dickeys incorporated the neighborhood Presbyterian serve, the Mr. O’Malley of the nearby bank, a state Representative, and neighborhood financial specialists. Reverend John Miller Dickey and his husband Sarah Emlen Cresson established Ashmun Institute in 1854. This later became Lincoln University. The family assumed a major part in re-steering the new Philadelphia and Baltimore Central Railroad (P&BC) through Oxford. The track was laid during the 1850s.
Fun Fact: Oxford became known for its confectionery and candy businesses and was the location of many manufacturing facilities. Oxford is really a great place to spend a few hours walking around and admiring the local shops and eateries. If you like to “shop local” this is a great place. Now open year round, the Oxford Farmers Market is a family-friendly indoor/outdoor market. Explore the wide-variety of market vendors ranging in crafts, baked goods, produce, antiques, and more. There are farmers and producers here from around the entire region! There is also a local Pennsylvania Amish market. The list of things to do and place to explore goes on and on. Don’t miss it!
